Nighttime approach into KASE (Aspen) RWY 15. Split screen vision aided / unaided comparison. Hub Notices Effective Q1 2010 The first of the new year is here and the Rocky Mountains ski areas are still rockin'! Skiers from around the world are arriving KDEN to experience the fabled Colorado powder. Many competitive skiers are here to practice for the upcoming Winter Olympics to be held this year in Vancouver BC, February 12-28. KDEN serves a number of smaller regional airports including Aspen, Gunnison, Montrose, Telluride, Durango, and Hayden just to name a few. You better have your mountain flight planning and IFR skills honed because wintertime mountain weather often brings fast changing conditions, quite often of the IMC variety. The four seasons in the Colorado Mountains can attract thousands of people and hundreds of aircraft to airports in Western Colorado. In addition to the main regionals, there are many other fun mountain strips just waiting to challenge you with their unique blend of terrain and density altitude considerations. Try a daytime flight into (and out of) Telluride- that's one you'll never forget. Remember, seasonal changes in the local mountain weather patterns bring special flying challenges.
